Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-54 Flown Seiko Quartz LC
On January 13, 1993, this watch left Earth. It flew aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-54, carried by mission specialist Mario Runco Jr., its caseback marked "STS-54" to the flight. The mission ran just under six days and 96 orbits, deployed the TDRS-F communications satellite, and closed with a four-and-a-half-hour spacewalk in which Runco and Gregory Harbaugh worked the open payload bay, proving out the tools and techniques NASA would later use to assemble the International Space Station. This watch was on board for all of it.
Digital quartz Seikos of this era earned their place in spaceflight the same way the mechanical chronographs did: legibility, reliability, and a display an astronaut could read at a glance through a visor. This one is a dual-time model, the configuration that mattered on orbit — Houston time on one register, mission time on the other, with no winding and not a single moving part to fail in microgravity.
Runco didn't retire this watch when Endeavour landed. He wore it for years of everyday use afterward, long enough that the original band wore out and was replaced with a generic strap. The flown artifact is the watch itself, and its history shows in exactly the way you'd want: an instrument the astronaut trusted enough to keep on his wrist. It comes to market directly from Runco's personal collection, with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Runco himself.
Flown personal watches almost never reach open sale. Astronauts keep what they carried, and the few pieces that surface tend to pass quietly between collectors and museums.
